Wooden floors (or even faux wood floors) are once again growing in popularity. The resurgence of mid-century modern style and cosy cottage aesthetics both lean heavily on quality timber elements and flooring is a great way to bring in that iconic natural warmth.

But how do you choose the right window furnishings to suit wooden flooring? Here are a few things to consider when making your decisions and some of the most popular options we see.

First, consider whether your floors have a warm or cool tone. Most real timber has a warm tone, however, some stain finishes, or faux-timber finishes, will have a cool tone. You’ll want to choose window furnishings that match the tone. For warm tones, consider creamy off-white, soft yellow, deep brown, etc. For cool tones, consider crisp whites, deep navy blues or bluish greens.

Next, decide if you want your window furnishings to blend in or stand out. This is definitely a personal choice, but curtains or blinds can be a great way to add dimension and interest to the style of a room. If you’re looking for something that fades into the background to let other aspects of the room shine, soft curtains in a neutral tone that closely matches your walls is your best bet.

But if you are looking to add more depth, consider a bolder more contrasting look. A bold pattern or a deeper tone can all add to the style of your room so don’t be afraid to take a bit of a risk. Especially when it comes to coordinating with timber floors, bringing in some bold colours, patterns or prints is a great way to add character and personality to your home.

Finally, think about when a dual track is right for your home. Combining blinds with curtains or a set of sheer curtains with blockouts not only adds functionality to your home, it can also create a beautiful, homey look.

Here are some of the most popular options we see when styling window furnishings with wood flooring.

1. Neutral with a pop of colour

A soft creamy sheer paired with a darker, but still neutral, blockout curtain creates a highly functional and calming space. To avoid it feeling too one-dimensional, we highly recommend some carefully chosen pops of colour to liven things up. Custom cushions, throw blankets, or artwork are great options for a pop of colour.

2. Bold florals

A bit part of the allure of timber flooring is the grounded, natural feel of it. Adding a bold floral pattern to the space is a great way to amplify that feeling and add visual interest to your home. Just be careful to not overdo it with multiple patterns throughout the room or you’ll risk it feeling overwhelming.

3. Heaps of texture

While blinds can be a sleek option, we love the look of plenty of texture. Honeycombs or roman blinds can help with this, offering a more textured style than roller or venetian blinds, however, curtains are also a great way to get this look. Linen, velvet, and jacquard are all highly textured fabrics that can be as bold or as subtle as you like.

Remember that styling wooden or faux-wood flooring is also highly forgiving. There is not much that fully clashes with the various shades of wood, especially if you get the tone right. So have a bit of fun with it and see where you can bring your own personality in.
